The accident involved a pickup truck and a heavy-duty bucket truck towing a woodchipper, Westport Assistant Fire Chief Kenneth Lombardi said. The bucket truck rolled onto its side in the accident, Lombardi said.
Westport Fire Department personnel were on the scene for almost two-and-a-half hours, he said. At times, the cleanup operations required a complete shutdown of all northbound I-95 lane, causing huge traffic jams for much of the afternoon, he said.
Also, traffic flow on surface roads in and around Westport was extremely heavy, he said.
The Fire Department dealt with leaking gasoline, diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid at the scene, Lombardi said.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Department of Transportation were called to the scene to assist.
One person was transported to Norwalk Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries while another narrowly escaped injury, Lombardi said.
The fast action of the emergency crews kept any adverse environmental impact from the spills to a minimum, he said.
