The man has been identified as William Sapone, 61, of Fairfield. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy as investigation into his death continues, police said.
Sapone was reported missing in Fairfield on Tuesday night by his wife, and the search continued into Westport. After searching places where he was known to frequent, police found his car parked at Burying Hill Beach in Westport.
Westport, Fairfield and Norwalk police, as well as the Coast Guard, searched the waters off Westport, and Fairfield police eventually found his rowing scull beached on Cockeone Island. A foot search by Fairfield and Westport police eventually located Sapone, who was found dead in the mud flats in Cockeone Bay.
Police said that more information will be released as the investigation develops.
