Dean Henton, 47, was charged with four counts of credit card theft, four counts of illegal use of a credit card, receipt of goods by illegal credit card use, criminal attempt at illegal use of a credit card, fifth-degree larceny, criminal trespass and violation of probation. He was held on $20,000 bond and will appear in court on Oct. 7.

Officers responded to the Humane Society on Post Road East at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on a report that a credit card was stolen, police said.

Henton entered the building through a rear door and stole four credit cards out of a purse, police said. He then used those cards at Cumberland Farms, Walgreens and Subway in Westport, according to police reports. Using the cards, he purchased a total amount of $750 in gift cards, police said.

Officers worked with the credit card company to track the purchases and received descriptions of the suspect by interviewing store employees, according to police. Officers tracked down Henton, who matched the description given by witnesses, police said.

Henton had a backpack with receipts and gift cards showing the credit card number of the victim, police said. He was then taken into custody.

Westport police also processed Henton for an outstanding arrest warrant on a charge of violation of probation out of New Haven. He was held on a separate $25,000 bond for that charge and will appear in court on Oct. 8.
