I-95 northbound was closed for nearly seven hours between Exits 17 and 18 because the accident, which occurred at about 5:15 a.m., the Department of Transportation reported. The highway finally reopened just after noon, DOT said.
One person died, and three to four others suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment in the crash, State Trooper Kelly Grant said.
At least two vehicles were involved, and troopers were investigating whether a third vehicle was involved, Grant said.
The roadway was closed in the area of the crash while State Police completed their investigation.
The victims were not identified, and state police did not release any details of the crash. In the hours after the crash, traffic tie-ups were reported back into Norwalk, with cars exiting I-95 for Route 7, Route 1 and area surface streets, DOT said.
