At about 11 p.m. Friday, Westport Police responded to Compo Road South on a report of a minor motor vehicle accident.
The driver, 61-year-old Alfred Fiore, smelled of an alcoholic beverage, according to police reports. After being given the standard field sobriety test, he was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters.
Fiore was the chief of police from 2004 to 2011. He retired in 2011 after 33 years on the force, citing a desire to work in the private sector.
Police said that Fiore also refused to submit to a breath test. He was charged with operating under the influence and released on $250 bond. He was given a court date of June 5.
