Former Police Chief, Dogs Rescued From Burning Home In Westport

Updated: WESTPORT, Conn. — A retired police chief suffered minor injuries after he was rescued from a fire Monday morning in the kitchen of his Westport home, according to fire officials.

Two dogs were also rescued from the burning home at 189 Cross Highway, said a statement from Assistant Fire Chief Michael Kronick.

The man rescued from the fire, former Westport Police Chief Ron Malone, suffered smoke inhalation in the fire, according to the Connecticut Post. Malone retired as the Westport police chief in 1990 and served on the RTM for more than 15 years, the Post said.

A call at 6:02 a.m. reported an occupant was trapped in the burning home, Kronick said.

The Westport Fire Department responded with all 11 firefighters and four officers on duty, along with Westport Police and EMS, he said.

Westport police officers rescued the man from a first floor window as the fire department arrived, he said.

Malone was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Kronick said. He said he was making Pop Tarts when the kitchen went up in flames, WestportNow.com said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and rescued two dogs that were still in the house, he said.

The cause is under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.

Firefighters from Fairfield assisted at the fire by providing additional manpower.
