The Westport Fire Department was responding to a reported explosion and smoke in the area of Elaine Road and Compo Road South. Units found an Eversource power line, running along the Metro North right of way near the tracks, down when they arrived. The line had caused the brush and some railroad ties along the side of the track to catch on fire.

Traffic on Track 3 had to be stopped and that on Tracks 1, 2 and 4 had to be slowed for the duration of the incident. Personnel from Metro North and Eversource both assisted Westport police and fire units. The power line had to be de-energized before firefighters could apply water and extinguish the fire. Westport Police also shut down Compo Road South while the incident was ongoing.

Tracks 1, 2 and 4 were reopened shortly thereafter but Track 3 remained closed. The last Westport Fire Department unit left the scene at 1:35 p.m.

Officials with the fire department remind locals that the area is in a "High Fire Danger Alert" -- which means that conditions are very favorable for brush fires. Be very careful discarding smoking materials and anything capable of producing a spark or open flame, especially near brush or other materials that could easily ignite.
