One person died on the state's roads and highways this year — a decrease from the four fatalities reported last year, Connecticut State Police said in a statement Wednesday.
The increased patrols began at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, and concluded at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26. The effort aimed to enforce all motor vehicle laws and focus on reducing the number of DUIs, crashes and injury-producing accidents occurring on the interstates, state roads, and local roadways.
Here are the statistics for the enforcement period:
- Speed violations: 465
- Seatbelt violations: 13
- All moving violations: 1,104 (including unsafe lane change, following too closely, cellphone usage, texting, failure to signal, etc.)
- DUI arrests: 28
- Accidents: 521, with injuries reported in 58 and one fatality
- Motorist assists: 409 (flat tires, broken down and disabled vehicles, etc.)
- Total calls for service: 6737
The fatality occurred Tuesday on Route 6 in Hampton, in the eastern part of the state, Connecticut state police said.
Patrick Dunn, a 32-year-old New London man, was killed when his pickup crashed into a house at 12:40 p.m. The crash is under investigation.
For comparison, here are the state police numbers from last year, covering 12:01 a.m. Dec. 22 through 11:59 p.m. Dec. 26:
- Speeding: 579
- Seatbelt violations: 50

- DUI arrests: 47
- Accidents: 528, of which 58 reported injuries, with one serious injury and four fatalities
