Firefighters were called to the home just after 11 a.m. Upon arrival, crews saw heavy flames coming from the right and rear of the home, Assistant Fire Chief Larry Conklin said in a statement. Both of the home’s elderly occupants, who are each physically disabled, were helped out of the home by a health care worker before firefighters arrived, Conklin said.
Flammable liquids present in the garage presented challenges as firefighters worked to douse the flames, Conklin said. Firefighters had to use dry chemical extinguishers alone with regular hose lines to put out the fire, Conklin said.
Before it was extinguished, flames spread to the outside of the home, but fire damage to the interior of the upper floors was kept to a minimum, Conklin said.
One firefighter was injured and sent to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation, Conklin said. Fairfield firefighters provided coverage at Westport Fire Headquarters during the incident.
The cause of the blaze was being investigated by the fire marshal's office
