Casey Savage of Kittery, Maine, was a passenger in a car that was rear-ended and pushed into another car at around 9:15 p.m. Thursday. The accident took place near exit 17 on I-95 northbound in Westport. Savage was taken to the hospital for treatment of a serious head injury, and died on Friday, according to police.

Police said that the three cars involved in the accident were all in the left lane when traffic slowed down. The car in front, a Honda Accord, and the middle car, a Toyota Camry, came to abrupt stops. The third car in line, a Subaru Forester, failed to stop in time and slammed into the back of the Camry, which was then pushed forward into the back of the Accord, police said.
Savage was a passenger in the Camry, which was being driven by a Kittery, Maine woman who turns 29 years old on Saturday. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation of minor injuries.
Savage was sitting in the back seat and wearing a seatbelt, according to the state police report.
The driver of the Forester, a 28-year-old man from Freeport, Maine, was also taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The accident is under investigation, police said.
