WESTPORT, Conn. — Ten people were sent to Norwalk Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries early Wednesday after a five-car pileup on I-95 southbound in Westport caused by a jack-knifed tractor trailer, fire officials said.

The accident occurred at about 1:25 a.m. on the Saugatuck River bridge near Exit 17. First arriving firefighters found a jack-knifed tractor-trailer blocking the left and center lanes, with five other vehicles involved, Assistant Fire Chief John Plofkin said.

One vehicle was located on top of the guard rail  in the breakdown lane, another was partially stuck underneath the trailer and a third was pinned against the Jersey barrier by the tractor’s cab, Plofkin said. The two other vehicles were found just south of the tractor-trailer, and all vehicles sustained moderate to heavy damage, he said.

Of the 19 people involved in the crash, 10 were treated at the scene and transported to Norwalk Hospital, Plofkin said. The others refused medical treatment at the scene and were released by EMS.

None of the people involved in the crash had to be extricated from their vehicles, Plofkin said.

The accident was being investigated by the Connecticut State Police. The last fire department unit left the scene by 2:20 a.m.
