Vance Carothers, Sr., 80, Longtime Former Redding Resident, Retired Pilot

POMPANO BEACH,  Fla. - Vance Carothers Sr. of Pompano Beach died April 11. He was 80.

Carothers was born in 1932 in Elsie, Neb., son of Glen and Vernon Carothers. Following his high school graduation he attended college at the University of Nebraska. He was then accepted into the Air Force Cadet Program, graduated, and remained in the Air Force for six years. He became a pilot for American Airlines where he flew for 33 years, retiring in 1992 as captain on a DC-10.

Carothers and his wife raised their family in Redding, Conn., where they lived for almost 30 years. They then moved into their summer home in Dennisport, Mass., spending the first 10 years of retirement there. Pompano Beach, Fl has been their home ever since, where they were members of St. Gabriel's Church.

Carothers is survived by his wife, Dian;  son, Vance Jr. (Chizuko) of West Palm Beach; daughters, Daneane Martin (Tom), Joy Hancock (Ronald), and Nellie Jones (Gregg); sister, Gwenn Jackson of Oregon; and six grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his parents.

Private services will be held Tuesday, April 16, in Newtown, Conn., and will be arranged by the Honan Funeral Home.
