WESTON, Conn. Susan Jaquith Hutchinson, a former first selectman of Weston, died June 16, surrounded by family at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass. She was 70. Hutchinson battled cancer for three years.
The daughter of Eleanor and Donald Jaquith, she was born Sept. 18, 1941. Hutchinson graduated from Beverly High School in 1959. After high school, she attended Nasson College in Springvale, Maine, and graduated with a degree in English in 1963.
While attending Nasson College, she met her husband of 49 years, Albert N. Hutchinson. Following graduation, she moved to New York City and worked for Chase Manhattan Bank. Hutchinson then moved to Weston in 1968 where she raised a family and became deeply involved in the community.
She served as a volunteer firefighter and a member of the planning and zoning commission. She also participated on the board of selectmen, eventually serving as the first selectman of Weston from 1979 to 1983.
Hutchinson and her husband moved to Florida in the fall of 1986, where she obtained a real estate broker's license and worked in the industry for several years. Upon retirement, she focused on her passions, including watercolors, photography and most recently, fiber arts, for which she won a national award.
She served as a past regent of the Amelia Island chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Hutchinson also served as the Florida State American Heritage chairperson in 2011 and as president of the Amelia Island historical society.
Most recently of Isle of Springs, Maine, and Fernandina Beach, Fla., she enjoyed gardening, knitting, reading, traveling, boating, summers at the Isle of Springs and spending time with her family and friends.
Hutchinson is survived by her husband Alan, a son Scott (Dina), a daughter Julie (Joel), five grandchildren, three sisters and a brother.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Boothbay Railway Village Meeting House in Boothbay, Maine. Peabody Funeral Homes in Derry, N.H., is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the International Mesothelioma Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston or the Isle of Springs Association Memorial Fund.
