Breaking News: Delivery Driver Dies After Crash In Fairfield County

Ronald (Ron) Vigars, 86, Westport Resident

WESTPORT, Conn. – Ronald (Ron) Vigars, of Westport, died Wednesday, April 20, after a brief stay at Norwalk Hospital. He was 86.

He was born May 20, 1929, in Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada, to Richard and Shirley Vigars. His professional career spanned all across the transportation sector. His first job was with the Maritime Bus Company in 1949, after which he worked for the Canadian National Railways. He spent 38 years working for Air Canada (1953-91).

After his retirement, he worked as a Westport school bus driver for Dattco from 1992-09. He had a deep passion for music and in his youth played the drums in a Canadian jazz band. He also was an accomplished artist on paper, a talent he shared with his late mother. He delighted in oil and excelled in charcoal, and produced quite a body of work throughout the years. He was an avid woodworker and hunting sportsman. Friends regularly would ask him to carve duck decoys for them, and he delighted in creating likenesses of songbirds and numerous cat silhouettes.

With his lifelong friends, he attended annual trips to his much-loved Canadian wilderness. He loved watching nature and animal shows on TV. He enthusiastically followed the New York Yankees, New York Rangers and University of Connecticut women's basketball. He will be missed by the Greens Farms Association, on whose board he served until the time of his death. He was elected president for three terms until he refused the honor, although he continued to serve on the board of directors for many more years.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Underwood) Vigars; and his daughter, Ronna Vigars, and her husband, Alan Alseth, both of Seattle.

He was predeceased by his parents and by his sister, Barbara Constable of Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.

At this time, there are no services planned.

Donations in his name may be made to any animal charity or animal organization.
