Honora 'Peg' McCullough, 78, Formerly Of Weston

WESTON, Conn. – Honora "Peg" McCullough, a 50-year Weston resident and special education teacher, died Aug. 31 at her home in Wallingford, Conn. She was 78. 

Born Nov. 22, 1933 in Worcester, Mass., McCullough was the daughter of Michael J. and Bridget Diggins O'Connor. She grew up in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston and received a bachelor's degree in education from the State Teachers College in Boston in 1955. 

She was then recruited to teach in Norwalk, where she taught first and second grades at Honey Hill and other city schools from 1955 to 1962. In 1960, she married Charles McCullough of Darien. They settled in Weston and raised three children. 

From 1962 to 1974, McCullough served as a Weston Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, religious education teacher and director at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, coordinator of Talent on Tap at Hurlbutt Elementary School and reading tutor volunteer. 

She went into special education teaching in Weston and Bethel after receiving a master's degree from Southern Connecticut State University in 1987. She retired in 1999 after being named "Teacher of the Year" at Bethel Middle School. 

In retirement, McCullough was a member of the Weston Historical Society and Norfield Grange, where she was treasurer. 

She is survived by her husband, Charlie; three children, Michael McCullough, of Lakeville, Mass., Patricia (Van) McGregor, of Andover, Kan., and Matthew McCullough, of Kensington, Conn.; two daughters-in-law, Susan McCullough and Yvette McCullough; two sisters, Kay O'Connor and Maureen Finn; and four grandchildren. 

Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. at Bouton Funeral Home in Georgetown. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Weston. Burial will follow at Willowbrook Cemetery in Westport. The family will hold a reception at the church hall following committal.
