World Harmony Run to Visit Westport

Run over to the Riverwalk on Tuesday, Aug. 17 to meet members of the World Harmony Run, a global torch relay.

Bill Hass, chairman of the Westport UN Hospitality Committee, announced today that members of the run will be gathered at the Riverwalk at 12:30 p.m.

Aimed at encouraging goodwill, the 10,000-mile World Harmony Run launched on April 18 in New York City. Since then, the Run has passed through more than 1,000 cities and towns this summer.

"By carrying the torch, millions of citizens are taking a step for harmony and bridging the cultural and social boundaries that separate nation from nation," athlete Carl Lewis, spokesman for the Run, said in a release. "By covering so many thousands of miles on foot, these courageous runners will encourage countless young people to transcend our differences and, instead, embrace our common aspiration for a better world."

Headed by a nonprofit group in New York City, the run was founded by a peace visionary as a way for people to express their own hopes and dreams for a harmonious world.

Since the first run in 1987, more than 5 million people have participated. More information about the Run can be found the official website.
