Work Keeps Moving at Westport's Shake Shack

WESTPORT, Conn. – The sounds of hammers, power saws and whistling resonated at 1849 Post Road E. on Wednesday afternoon as construction crews worked on one of Westport's newest eateries — Shake Shack.

Made popular by its hand-formed burgers, this modern-day version of a roadside burger stand is expected to open this summer, said Theresa Mullen, director of marketing and communication at Union Square Hospitality Group, the parent company of Shake Shack.

"We haven't yet set a specific [opening] date, but our goal is to open by mid-summer," Mullen said. "We hope to be open by the end of July."

If you're looking for more than just burgers, Shake Shack also serves hotdogs, French fries, frozen custard, milkshakes and even beer and wine.

The Westport Planning and Zoning Commission approved plans for the 3,000-square-foot site, which includes indoor and outdoor seating, in March. Shake Shack first presented its interest in opening a Westport location in October.

Shake Shack opened in 2004 at Madison Square Park in New York. Currently, there are 11 restaurants located throughout the country: seven in New York City, including one at Citifield; two in Washington, D.C.; one in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and one in Miami.

There's also a Shake Shack in Dubai, United Arab Emirate, and one opening in Kuwait City on July 6, Mullen said. The Westport location will be the first in Connecticut.

"We're super psyched," Mullen said of the Westport location.
