Westport Y Hosts Bike Safety Workshop For Kids

WESTPORT, Conn. – If you worry about your child riding his or her bicycle on the road, the Westport Weston Family Y is hosting a free bike safety workshop Sunday for kids ages 6 to 15.

In the one-hour course, kids will learn about the rules of the road, how to stay safe while riding and how to keep their bikes safe as well. The class, co-hosted by the Sound Cyclists Bicycle Club, is designed for riders of all skill levels, as well as their parents.

“Cycling is great exercise, and a bike ride together makes for quality family time,” Meaghan George, camp and youth director at the Y, said in a statement. “But our roads are increasingly crowded and drivers increasingly distracted. We need to give kids all the tools they need to stay safe on the road, and Sound Cyclists is a great partner to help us do that.”

The workshop will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Y’s Mahackeno Outdoor Center, 14 Sunny Lane. As space is limited, parents are urged to reserve a spot as soon as possible by calling 203-226-8981, or by emailing Meaghan George at mgeorge@westporty.org.

In conjunction with the workshop, a bike donation event to benefit needy children and adults also is conducted at Mahackeno. The Northeast Community Cycles group, a Fairfield County nonprofit, will be accepting donations of bikes, bike parts, tools, volunteer hours and money to help refurbish the bikes, which are donated to needy children and adults throughout the county.
