Westport Post Office Users Mull New Location

When Ashley Baril, a Norwalk teacher who uses the Westport Post Office, heard the office may relocate, she wasn't too bothered. "I don't think this move will have a tremendous impact on people," said Baril, a Monroe resident who has a P.O. box at the main Westport office at 154 Post Road E. "It's just a change, and some people don't like change. But once people get used to it, it won't be a problem. It's a shame, though, because this is such a beautiful, iconic building."

For Andrew Masi, however, the move to Playhouse Square would be an inconvenience, considering he works directly across the street from the current location. "I like this location, for obvious reasons, but I can adapt to the change," Masi said. "If they have to move, they have to move."

Financial constraints, parking concerns and a larger than needed current building are contributing factors that prompted the search for a new location. Though Masi finds the current location more convenient, he said Playhouse Square would provide for better parking. "People won't have to worry about parking across the street and crossing the traffic."

Although the U.S. Postal Service last week announced it had selected Playhouse Square as the new home for the main Westport Post Office, a regional spokeswoman for the postal service said nothing is set in stone.

"This is the location we've selected, yes, but we are currently in the public comment phase," said spokeswoman Maureen Marion. "We encourage people who have comments, in any direction, to contact us. We want to know what people think so can make the best choice possible."

Comments should be directed to Vice President, Facilities, 2 Congress St., Room 8, Milford, MA 01757, Attention: Joseph Mulvey.
