WESTPORT, Conn. Mosquitoes trapped in two different Westport locations have tested positive for West Nile Virus, Mark A.R. Cooper of the Westport Weston Health District announced Tuesday.
"As expected, with the heavy spring rains, Westport and Weston's water courses and wetlands have been full of water," Cooper, the agency's health director, said in a release. "And with the early onset of hot temperatures, the potential for an extraordinary number of mosquitoes this year has been realized."
Early results from the state Mosquito Management Program, released in the spring, showed nearly three times as many mosquitoes were being trapped in towns around Westport and Weston than last year.
Although mosquitoes here have tested positive for the virus, Cooper said, there are no reported cases of West Nile infections in Westport, Weston or other parts of the state.
However, he added that it's early in the season to see West Nile Virus in the mosquito population and, as a result, there will be an increased risk for human infections into early fall. That's why he's urging residents to take precautions.
Because mosquitoes deposit their eggs in any pool of water, the health district recommends residents eliminate any object outside that can hold water and become a breeding place for mosquitoes. It is also suggests residents clean gutters that may be retaining water; empty wading pools and bird baths every few days; regularly chlorinate swimming pools; make sure covers on grills, boats, pools and other outside equipment do not collect water; wear clothing that minimizes skin exposure; and use mosquito repellents.
