Westport Fire Chief: FEMA Deadline Approaches

WESTPORT, Conn. – With only a week left to apply for Hurricane Sandy disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Westport Fire Chef and Emergency Management Director Andrew Kingsbury is urging residents to register for aid if they haven’t already.

Residents who were affected by the storm are encouraged to apply for FEMA assistance even if they have insurance, have applied with another agency or have a filed flood insurance claim, Kingsbury said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

The registration deadline is Feb. 12. Residents can register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov (or at m.fema.gov on a smartphone) or by calling the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362.

Kingsbury said residents who have questions about elevating their home out of the floodplain and about assistance that may be available to do so should first register with FEMA and then contact Michele in Westport’s Office of Emergency Management at 203-341-5024.
