Westport Church To Replace Black Lives Matter Banner That Was Vandalized

WESTPORT, Conn. — A church in Westport where a "Black Lives Matter" banner was ripped down last week plans to hang a new banner up in September, according to Westport News.

The banner was cut off and ripped from its metal frame at the Unitarian Church in Westport in the overnight hours between Aug. 23 and Aug. 24, according to police. Church officials plan on ordering a new banner, and hanging it in a dedication ceremony on Sept. 17, according to Westport News.

Rev. Dr. John T. Morehouse of the Unitarian Church told Westport News that the church is still committed to ending racism and hate and stands by the message that black lives matter. He said that the community has been supportive of the church in the wake of the vandalism, and that the Unitarian Church will continue to work to create a welcoming and multicultural community in Westport, according to Westport News.

At the time of the vandalism, both First Selectman Jim Marpe and Police Chief Foti Koskinas said they support messages of equality and tolerance, and they would work to prevent further incidents.

The dedication ceremony for the new banner will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 12:15 p.m., according to Westport News.
