WESTPORT, Conn. Westport resident Steve Obsitnik, a businessman and educator, is looking to challenge U.S. Rep. Jim Himes for his seat in Congress. Obsitnik, a Republican, announced his candidacy for the 4th Congressional District on Tuesday.
"I am an optimist, and I believe America's best days are still ahead of us," Obsitnik said Tuesday, according to a statement.
"We need leadership in Washington to support entrepreneurship, excellence in education, fiscal responsibility and private sector job growth. These are the keys to moving our economy forward, and I intend to be a strong voice on behalf of these core principles."
Obsitnik is an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship at the Jack Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield. According to his campaign website, he has worked as an executive in the technology industry for the past 20 years, most recently as the CEO of Quintel, a provider of wireless infrastructure to mobile operators in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
After graduating from Stamford High School in 1985, Obsitnik went on to earn a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he graduated with honors. He served five years in the Navy as a lieutenant onboard the USS Ray, a nuclear attack submarine.
After his Navy service, Obsitnik earned a master's in business administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He and wife Suzanne Tager, a management consultant, have two children.
