Westport Bus Driver Faces Multiple Charges

The driver of a Westport school bus that crashed into a tree in November while en route to Coleytown Elementary School is being charged with reckless driving, News12 reports.

Bridgeport resident James Torti was scheduled to be arraigned in Norwalk Superior Court on Friday, but his case was reportedly continued to next month. He was released on $20,000 bond and is facing charges of reckless driving, reckless endangerment and failure to drive in the proper lane.

The Nov. 19 accident happened at about 8:30 a.m. just over the Westport-Weston line on Lyons Plains Road after the bus veered off the roadway and struck a tree. None of the 23 students on the bus at the time was seriously injured.

Torti, who was working three jobs at the time, allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel, police said. Blood tests, obtained by a warrant, came back negative for alcohol and other substances.
