Weston proposes to slice salaries by nearly $120,000 next year. But the town is also slated to add almost $100,000 to other employees' paychecks. Finance Director RIck Darling reports that the total salary request for next year, including holiday pay, overtime and other allowances, is nearly $42,000 more than this year's salary outlays.
First Selectman Gayle Weinstein is requesting cuts to the land-use department that decreases its operational hours from five days per week to four. However, 91 percent of Weston's staff is up for raises only Weinstein's salary will remain unchanged at $43,875. The Public Works Department is still undergoing salary negotiations.
Union and non-union police officers and communication employees' salaries are also projected to increase by 1.75 percent. Weston's town administrator is the top town earner at $126,412, up $3,000 from this year. Salaries for school officials were not available for this report, but Connecticut superintendents earn on average more than $165,000 annually, according to the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents.
The total salary request for next year tops out at $3.95 million, which represents 35 percent of the town's $11.19 million budget. The town also will spend $213,000 for a new public works vehicle.
The municipal budget is roughly 17 percent of total town spending. Schools account for 71 percent, and the remaining 12 percent goes to capital expenses and debt service.
The town budget goes to referendum this spring.
