Westonites Can Clean Up at Middle School

WESTON, Conn. — A comfort station will open at Weston Middle School at 8 a.m. Monday for residents to shower and use bathroom facilities, First Selectman Gayle Weinstein said in an email Sunday night.

Residents are asked to bring towels and amenities. Food and water will be available, and residents will be able to fill up their own containers with potable water from spigots outside the school. Sleeping facilities will also be available for those who cannot sleep in their homes, she said.

Connecticut Light & Power reports 3,798 households in Weston were without power as of 7 p.m. Sunday — 99 percent of its customers in town. The Weston Emergency Management Team told residents in a CodeRed alert to prepare to be without electricity for a minimum of several days and possibly more than a week. Questions regarding electricity should be directed to CL&P, not the town's communications center. The Emergency Management Team recommends that residents keep travel to a minimum, as stated in a CodeRed alert Sunday night.

Damage is widespread in town. A total of six downed trees on wires are on Farrell Road between Steep Hill and Good Hill Road, Isabelle Alvarado told The Daily Weston in an email. Police said most roads in town were blocked with trees in wires.

The CodeRed alert further states, "Assume that all downed wires, as well as anything they contact, such as guardrails or trees are energized and dangerous. ... Winds are expected to continue throughout the night with some very strong gusts, continue to maintain wind related precautions."

Weston Schools' campus will be closed for all student activities and sports Monday, Aug. 29. A decision regarding the school's first day of classes, Tuesday, Aug. 30, will be made by 4 p.m. Monday. The status of the school will be posted on the website, sent to families via AlertNOW and communicated via twitter @WestonPS.
