WESTON, Conn. A group of campers splashed into the pool at Weston Middle School on the first day of camp Tuesday. But camp is about more than just swimming.
"It's a sports camp. It gives kids an opportunity to play more often than in Little League. They develop more skills and have fun with their friends," said Dennis Whalen. "Competition doesn't alienate kids the kids are grouped by ability and competitive levels."
During the morning, counselors such as Mike Birch and Dan Ungar take their groups to play baseball, basketball and floor hockey. "Working with kids is a good experience for me and my profession because I teach," said Ungar. "It's a fun way to work with kids that have never played before."
Ungar and Birch's campers are in third and fourth grades. After lunch, the campers go swimming and play recreational games, including dodgeball and capture the flag.
The sports camp is put on by the Weston Parks and Recreation. About 80 campers are signed up for each of the five weeks. On the last day, an awards ceremony is held.
Other Parks and Recreation camps include the Junior Eagle Camp and the Soaring Eagle Camp both of which also started Tuesday. The Soaring Eagle campers take field trips Tuesdays and Thursdays to places such as the IMAX theater, duck pin bowling, the Beardsley Zoo and Compo Beach. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the campers do arts and crafts, take swim lessons, and play in the gym and on the tennis courts.
