Weston Schools Chief Resigns

Weston schools Superintendent Jerome R. Belair announced Tuesday he will resign on Feb. 4, 2011. He is leaving to become the superintendent in Waterford.

Belair's resignation comes on the heals of a controversial decision by the Board of Education this summer to increase his salary – as well as the salaries of other administrative personnel – by 9.5 percent. The board claimed the salary increase was necessary to be commensurate with the salaries of administrative personnel in neighboring localities.

Belair served as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for two years before becoming superintendent in May 2008. In a statement, school officials praised Belair's work on the curriculum and on spending.

As superintendent of Waterford, Belair will be closer to his home in Groton Long Point.

Belair could not be reached for comment.
