“When you go through the finish you walk down this long corridor where you get your medal and water,’’ said Marafiote, who finished in 3:56:39. “I had just gotten through all that by about five minutes. I was walking back to my car and heard a blast. We stopped for a second, then carried on. I went to a vendor and bought a soda. Nobody knew what was going on. I got in the car and heard what was happening. It was a shock.”
Marafiote got out of downtown Boston quickly, just as it was being locked down. “I got out just in time,’’ he said. “It was awful.”
Marafiote said most of his running friends finished before the blasts occurred. He also grieved for the people killed and hurt in the explosions, and felt sadness for runners who did not get a chance to finish.
“Imagine doing all that training and in mile 25 it gets shut down,’’ he said. “It’s so sad. And for the people at the finish line that can never run again. What’s wrong with people.”
