WESTON, Conn. The Weston Republican Town Committee has endorsed Steve Obsitnik in his bid for the U.S. House of Representatives and Chris Shays in his run for the U.S. Senate.
Seventeen of the 25 members of the committee attended a meeting Tuesday night and voted after many of the candidates spoke. The exact vote count was not released.
Obsitnik, two other Congressional candidates and two Senate candidates spoke at the meeting. Shays did not attend but was represented by a campaign official.
Britta Lerner, chairman of the Weston committee, said Obsitnik and Shays are very strong Republicans who have shown great interest in the state of Connecticut and the town of Weston. They support less government, less taxes and demonstrate an interest in the state specifically as opposed to purely national issues.
Obsitnik, a Westport resident, is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, a Democrat from Greenwich, to represent the 4th Congressional District. Obsitnik is CEO of Quintel, a provider of wireless infrastructure to mobile operators in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
I am honored to have the endorsement of the Weston Republican Town Committee, Obsitnik said. The committee has worked tirelessly to promote Republican values and help elect candidates to office.
Shays hopes to be the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, an Independent Democrat from Stamford who is not seeking re-election. Shays, who was the congressman in the 4th District from 1987 to 2009, was co-chair of the Commission on Wartime Contracting in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2009 to 2011. A former resident of Darien and Stamford, he now lives in Bridgeport.
The Weston committee is raising money for the candidates and will hold a clambake June 9. Lerner said Senate candidates Linda McMahon and Shays will attend along with Obsitnik and other Congressional candidates, including Richard Wieland and Chris Meek.
