WESTON, Conn. Police officers have been working "around the clock" since Saturday night dealing with Hurricane Irene and its aftermath, Police Chief John Troxell said Thursday. Five of the town's officers worked a 24-hour shift through Sunday night when officers could not get to work.
The department members have been working 16-hour shifts since the storm. Officers have been assigned to assist Connecticut Light & Power crews by directing them to areas with damage and prioritizing repairs, said Troxell.
Twelve CL&P crews were in Weston on Thursday during the day and another 12 crews were expected to arrive at 6 p.m. to work through the night.
Through Tuesday, the police department was receiving calls of trees continuing to fall since the storm, Troxell said.
"We have had requests for more cones, barricades and police tape," said Troxell. "There was so much damage, the highway department and police department didn't have enough equipment to place it everywhere. ... Remember when driving, especially in the dark, to drive with due care."
A CodeRed Alert was sent to the town Thursday stating that the comfort station at the Weston Middle School will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekend. Shower facilities, water and ready-to-eat meals are available. Town Hall will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the weekend for WiFi access and charging. The library will remain open until 9 p.m. Friday.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is performing a preliminary damage assessment in the area. All Weston property owners are requested to report any damage they have sustained by calling 203-222-2693 and leaving a message with any information on damage.
