Weston Police Warn of Scam Targeting Elderly

WESTON, Conn. – Weston Police Detective Karl Filsinger is warning residents to be on the lookout for scam artists targeting the elderly.

“If anyone has been contacted by a representative of Alpha Express LTD Business Services, Claims and Processing Center, be suspicious,” Filsinger said.

A senior citizen received a call from the company telling him that he won $3.5 million, $100,000 in cash, and a 2011 Mercedes Benz.

“Subsequent documents sent to the resident explained he had been entered after using a credit card to make purchases of qualified sponsor products. The company said that the car was being shipped and should be received the following day. The resident was instructed to purchase moneypak cards at Walmart in the amount of $2,500 to give to the people delivering the car and the winnings,” Filsinger said.

Although the resident did purchase the Walmart cards, he became suspicious after the company also asked him to pay $7,900 in taxes and fees. The resident then called police.

Filsinger warned residents to be leery of “out of the blue” calls. “If it sounds too good to be true, guess what, it's not true,” he said

If anyone has questions about random calls or wants to have a company verified, they can call Weston Police or contact the Better Business Bureau, Filsinger said.
