Weston Police Get OK for Tasers

The Weston Police Department will add another weapon to its arsenal as a result of a decision by the Police Commission on Tuesday night. In a 7-0 vote, it approved the use of Tasers by police officers, as well as regulations governing the use of the handheld devices, which use a non-lethal high-voltage charge of electricity to temporarily disable a belligerent or dangerous suspect.

A large portion of the commission's discussion focused on the wording of the regulations, with several semantic changes proposed and accepted.

"The policy needs to match the training," said police Chief John Troxell. "The training is mandated, how long and what type, so the policy is what has to change." The proposed document seemed to do that, he said. "I have no problem with it," Troxell said, adding that the regulations could be amended, if necessary.

In other action, the commission voted to hire Dr. Larry Jetmore to assist in interviewing candidates for the department. Jetmore has worked with the town during previous interview processes.
