WESTON, Conn. Peters Spirit Shop on Weston Road will most likely be open for business Sunday, if the owners son is willing to work.
Owner Larry Vavrek said hes willing to try opening on Sundays now that a new law allows retail sales of liquor, beer and wine from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. But its impractical for a small business like his with a minimal staff, he said. Hes also not sure it will produce enough business to justify Sunday operations. If its just for a couple of six packs of beer, we wont continue, he said.
Paul Vinci, who was working in the store Thursday, doubted Sunday operations would generate much additional revenue, which was Gov. Daniel P. Malloys main reason for allowing Sunday sales. The biggest days are Friday and Saturday, but theyll get softer, and its already slow on Monday, and it will be extremely slow, Vinci said. Business will be more spread out.
He also said the small business could lose money by opening on Sundays. Well be paying employees, turning on coolers and running lights, and most sales will be beer with minimal profits.
Jim Magee, owner of Peters Market, no longer sells beer, so the Sunday law wont directly impact his business. But he thinks having the Spirit Shop open will boost sales. It could benefit us," he said. "Well have to see how it goes.
