Weston Liquor Store Might Give Sunday Sales a Shot

WESTON, Conn. – Peter’s Spirit Shop on Weston Road will most likely be open for business Sunday, if the owner’s son is willing to work.

Owner Larry Vavrek said he’s willing to try opening on Sundays now that a new law allows retail sales of liquor, beer and wine from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. But it’s impractical for a small business like his with a minimal staff, he said. He’s also not sure it will produce enough business to justify Sunday operations. “If it’s just for a couple of six packs of beer, we won’t continue,” he said.

Paul Vinci, who was working in the store Thursday, doubted Sunday operations would generate much additional revenue, which was Gov. Daniel P. Malloy’s main reason for allowing Sunday sales. “The biggest days are Friday and Saturday, but they’ll get softer, and it’s already slow on Monday, and it will be extremely slow,” Vinci said. “Business will be more spread out.”

He also said the small business could lose money by opening on Sundays. “We’ll be paying employees, turning on coolers and running lights, and most sales will be beer with minimal profits.”

Jim Magee, owner of Peter’s Market, no longer sells beer, so the Sunday law won’t directly impact his business. But he thinks having the Spirit Shop open will boost sales. “It could benefit us," he said. "We’ll have to see how it goes.”
