Weston Library Director Retires After 35 Years

Jane Atkinson retired Friday as director of the Weston Public Library after almost 36 years of unprecedented service. The Board of the Weston Public Library has invited the community to join Atkinson, her family and friends to thank her for all she has done for the library and the Town of Weston. The board called Atkinson’s service “unprecented.”

Atkinson has been devoted to libraries for all her working life. She worked at the Russell Library in Middletown, the Olin Library at Wesleyan University and the Trumbull Library. She began her career in Weston in July of 1975. In April of 1980 she became the library's director.

Under her leadership, the library doubled in size. In 1985, the Children's Room was expanded to complete the original Joseph Salerno design. Another major addition, which includes the Community Room, was completed in 1993. Atkinson took pride in the fact that both of these projects were done without ever closing the library.

She also brought the library into the digital age through overseeing its automation in 2001. Atkinson has always excelled in understanding the needs of library patrons, many of whom have acknowledged the importance of the library and their gratitude for Atkinson’s leadership through annual donations and bequests in their wills, the board said.

The library board invites residents to come thank Atkinson for her dedicated work and wish her well in her retirement at a reception on Sunday, March 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Library Community Room. Refreshments will be served. RSVP to the library board at westonlibraryct@gmail.com or by calling Amy Sanborn at (203) 454-2668.
