Weston Gets a Cleaners After Long Dry Spell

Dirty laundry has a new enemy now that Minute Men Cleaners finally opened its doors in Weston.

Owner Ken Shepard will be in and out of the store for the next week, ironing out any potential bumps that surface during the opening phase.

"I think having the dry cleaners come is going to add an extra service to Weston that's been missing a few years," said Peter Sullivan, a realtor at Camelot Real Estate two doors down from Minute Men.

The last dry cleaning service left town five years ago, and Westonites have grown accustomed to traveling to other towns to handle their special laundry needs. The new cleaners is located in the former Weston Flower Shop building.

The increase in foot traffic should also benefit the shops at Weston Town Center, says Weston Hardware and Houseware owner Frank Kudia. "We should get some more people in the early morning or evening, which will be good," he said. "It will be good for everyone."

Roughly 50 Westonites already use Minute Men's Westport store, but now that the Weston location is open, it will allow for better service says employee Alvaro Torres.

The family-owned business has been around since 1960 and offers specialty services such as leather, suede, rug and drapery cleaning. It also provides free delivery and winter storage for bulky seasonal garments as well as tailoring and traditional wet laundry services.

The company now has five stores in Fairfield County. Minute Men takes its moniker from the nickname given to Revolutionary War militias that were known for their rapid deployment capabilities. "As with the legendary Minute Men of Revolutionary War days," begins the company's website, "the staff of Minute Men Cleaners, with over 250 combined years in the dry cleaning industry, is ready at a moment’s notice to handle all your garment care needs."

Are you going to use Minute Men? What other businesses would you like to see in town?
