Weston Delays First Day of School

WESTON, Conn. – Weston's first day of school has been canceled for Tuesday, Aug. 30, and schools will also be closed Wednesday, Aug. 31. No decision has been yet for school on Thursday as problems continue with power outages from Tropical Storm Irene.

Bruce Edison filled up a cooler with water at Weston's comfort center Monday. Denise Harvey, who was volunteering at the middle school, said a steady stream of residents was using the facility for water, showers and recharging.

"People are very appreciative. They're glad we're able to provide support," said Harvey. The Weston Middle School's pool locker room is being used for showers – which is a group shower, so people can wear bathing suits if they prefer.

Many town roads are still blocked because trees are on wires. On Monday, residents were sitting on their steps and giving directions to detoured drivers. One man walked down Valley Forge Road and stopped drivers to tell them Godfrey Road East was blocked by a large tree on wires.

The Savitskys, who were busy raking Monday afternoon, said they had been without power since 2 a.m. Sunday. More than 3,500 households, or 92 percent of those served in Weston by Connecticut Light & Power, were still without power as of 7 p.m. Monday.
