The results are in from the vote Thursday night in Weston.
The town operating budget passed, 697-186.
The school operating budget passed, 574-308.
The question to appropriate $30,000 for the required documentation to refer a proposal to the Planning and Zoning Commission to construct a nondenominational municipal cemetery failed, 338-536. Out of 6,458 registered voters in town, only 882, including absentee ballots, contributed to the results. That's just more than 13 percent.
John Silvestri of Weston brought his daughter, Christina, to the polls Thursday to show her the importance of voting. "We have to be fiscally responsible," said Silvestri. He said Weston is fiscally responsible "to some degree, not 100 percent."
Martha Diamond of Weston said she was "very unhappy" with the results. The cemetery issue should not have been on the ballot, she said. "Imagine wanting to die here. That's unusual," said Diamond. "I've been here for 42 years. I don't want taxes to drive me out."
Cathy Minter of Weston said she was "delighted" with the results of all three questions. She said she would rather be an organ donor and give her body to research than have it take up space in the ground. "There's not enough space for the living," she said.
Both Diamond and Minter said they were disappointed with the voter turnout.
The town's approved operating budget reflects an increase of 1.86 percent to $11,184,216. The school's operating budget, with an increase of 1.05 percent, is $45,166,337.
