WESTON, Conn. – Psychotherapist and author Jaqueline Lapa Sussman will lead a seminar for Weston parents on how to talk to your kids about uncomfortable subjects.
Sussman, author of “Images of Desire” and a longtime Weston resident, will focus on how to deal with your children’s feelings of discomfort—and your own—when discussing difficult subjects such as sex and drugs. “Discomfort and Dialogue” will teach parents how to get their kids to open up to them about these issues.
The talk is the second installment in a Weston Youth Services program on talking to your kids about touchy subjects. April’s theme deals with three of the big issues for parents of teens: “Sex, Drugs and Rock N’ Roll.”
The program will bring in experts from around the area to hold discussions with parents on issues such as sex, alcohol, drugs, violence, divorce and death. Each month will have a different theme. After April’s talks on sex and drugs abuse, May will focus on parents’ jobs as role models, and June will work on the theme of “Camp, College and Coming of Age.”
“It’s natural to want to shield children from the harsh realities of the world, and feel uneasy discussing the facts (and especially the fatalities) of life,” Weston Youth Services Director Michelle Albright said in a press release. “However children need reliable information from responsible sources, and it’s crucial for families to find some common and comfortable ground to tackle the tough stuff.”
Sussman’s talk will take place Tuesday, April 23, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Weston Public Library.
