FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Twenty-five host families from Redding, Weston, Easton, and other towns welcomed Fresh Air Fund kids from New York City who were dropped off at the Ludlow Middle School on Friday afternoon for one-week stays.
The families held signs with the kids names on them and hugged them as they got off the bus.
Holly Olsen, who moved to Redding four months ago from Utah, is hosting Olunapamillerinlyo, a young girl from New York City who lived in Nigeria. We did foster exchanges with Navajo Indian children in Utah, she said. Its fun and a good opportunity for my daughters.
Ellen Prackup from Weston is hosting Amber, a nine-year-old girl from the Bronx. Its the second summer Prackup has participated in the Fresh Air Fund program.
She plans to take Amber to the beach and to a farm to pick peaches. Its a great experience, we dont do anything out of the ordinary, its good old-fashioned summertime fun, she said.
Claire-Ann Meskers from Easton is hosting Jeffrey, a 10-year-old boy from Queens, for the second time.
Im looking forward to seeing Jeffrey again, she said. She plans to take him to the Easton Firemans Carnival, the SoNo Arts Festival and the Maritime Museum. He had a great time last summer and called to ask if he could come back again, she said.
Bernhard Klein Wassink from Redding is hosting a Fresh Air Fun kid for the second time. Josiah, an 11-year-old from the Bronx will go to a nature camp in Wilton with Klein Wassinks son. The Fresh Air Fund program is nice for the kids and good for our kids who can learn how fortunate we are and see the diversity. Its easy not to realize our good fortune and this way we can help.
The kids will return to New York on August 10.
