Voters have many reasons for casting ballots, but for Westport resident Cindy Hartog, the reason was very close to home. It was her teenaged daughter. "I came out today [to Coleytown Middle School] because my 19-year-old daughter, who's not here, called me and told me that if I didn't vote, we risk Connecticut swaying to the Republican side."
And for Hartog, a registered Democrat, that was all the motivation she needed, she said. Not only did she vote, she voted Democrat down the ticket, including for Jonathan Steinberg, candidate for state representative in the 136th District.
Like Hartog, registered Democrat Nancy Judson voted 100 percent blue today. "I'm a tried and true Democrat," Judson said.
Though she said she always votes, Judson said the issues surrounding this election are no doubt an important factor.
"There's the economy, healthcare, education, energy consumption: There are so many issues facing the country right now that need to be dealt with," she said.
On the other side of the isle, registered Republican Debra Murtaugh said she voted for her party across the board.
Murtaugh said she tries to vote in every election, and came out Tuesday because she feels a change, not only in Connecticut, is desperately needed.
"I felt it was important, as a Republican, to get my voice out this year," Murtaugh said. "I'm not happy with the leadership at the moment."
