Veteran Journalist Harold Hornstein, 90

Easton resident and veteran Connecticut journalist Harold Hornstein died on New Year’s Day at the Cheshire home of his daughter, Deborah Alexander Hereld. He was 90.

Hornstein was born in Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn College before enlisting in the Army. He served four years in Europe during World War II in the anti-aircraft gun crew regiment. He returned home and attended the University of Missouri School of Journalism on the GI Bill, graduating with a degree in journalism.

Hornstein worked at several newspapers over the course of his distinguished career, including the old Westport Town Crier, the Westport News, the Fairfield Citizen-News, the New Haven Register and the Bridgeport Post (now the Connecticut Post).

He received several awards for his writing, including a national Meeman Award for writing about farm preservation and land conservation, and the Stephen Collins Public Service Award from the Connecticut Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. He was also inducted into the Connecticut Journalism Hall of Fame.

In addition to his lifelong passion for the newspapers, Hornstein was an avid sports fan and enjoyed a variety of music.

Survivors, in addition to his daughter, are his wife of 56 years, Patricia Hubbell of Easton; a son, Jeffrey Hornstein of New York City, three granddaughters, and a niece.

A celebration of Hornstein's life will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Easton Public Library, 691 Morehouse Road. There are no calling hours, and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
