Weston's Onion Barn

WESTON, Conn. — You can trade your old lightbulbs in for compact fluorescent lightbulbs at Weston's Onion Barn in the coming weeks.

On Oct. 22 and Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge - a nonprofit organization funded by the U.S. Department of Energy - will host a lightbulb exchange at the Booster Club's Bottle and Can Drive. Residents can exchange up to four of their working incandescent bulbs for up to four new, energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs for free.

Compact fluorescent bulbs can save an average Connecticut home up to $125 a year, Neighbor to Neighbor says.

Residents also can sign up for a free, in-home lighting visit from Neighbor to Neighbor, during which they can then get up to 20 lightbulbs replaced free of charge. Wilton and Ridgefield residents are also welcome to participate in this program.

The Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge is an initiative funded by a grant from the Department of Energy that aims to reduce residential energy consumption by 20 percent over the next two years. In addition to Weston, 13 other towns in Connecticut are competing in the challenge and offering free workshops, a free lighting program, and other opportunities for residents to take steps to become more energy efficient.

For every step they take, residents will earn rewards points for their town that can be redeemed for prizes such as solar-powered LED street lights, electric cars for municipal fleets, and solar-powered trash compactors. To learn more, visit www.CTEnergyChallenge.com.
