The Board of Education building's roof got a little bit shinier Thursday. Town officials and energy spokespersons celebrated its new solar panels at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Ross Solar Group installed the $40,000, 7-kilowatt (kW) system continuing Weston's record of supporting clean energy alternatives. The town earned 4 kW by joining the Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Program. The cost will be split with CCEF.
"This is just the beginning," said Deirdre Doran, chair of the Weston Committee for Sustainability, adding that the town will continue to save energy in other ways in the future. "With continued vigor, the Town of Weston is devoted to providing opportunities for residents to learn how to reduce their carbon footprints and their energy bills. It is proud to be part of the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund's efforts to foster a safe, clean, sustainable environment."
Superintendent of schools, Jerome Belair, said the installation of the panels will help the schools to educate Weston's students about alternative energy. That commitment to saving energy has became a "part of the culture" in the previous school year, with the school system reducing its energy costs by $334,000. "We're really doing our part in conserving energy," he said.
Weston, which joined the clean energy community in 2007, is one of 14 towns in the state that is a part of the Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge to help educate and encourage residents to use clean energy.
