Puppies Behind Bars is an organization that teaches prison inmates to raise puppies to be service dogs. One the dogs reach a suitable age they are trained to be either service dogs for wounded veterans or explosives-detecting dogs for police.

“Not only do inmates have unlimited time to spend with the puppies, but they benefit from the responsibility of being puppy raisers in ways that are especially important to their rehabilitation: they learn patience, what it is like to be completely responsible for a living being, how to give and receive unconditional love, and –since puppy raisers take classes and train the dogs together –how to work as a team,” founder Gloria Gilbert Stoga wrote on the organization’s website.

Rotans, the program’s senior instructor, is responsible for training new staff members and puppy raisers in the program’s five partner prisons. He will talk about the organization’s work Saturday.

The meeting will begin at 8 p.m. at the Norfield Parish Hall, at 64 Norfield Road in Weston. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
