State Sen. John McKinney heads into his seventh term with his focus on creating employment opportunities in Connecticut. "It's at the top of my list, and it should be at the top of everybody's list," he said.
The veteran Republican legislator, whose 28th District includes Easton and Weston, said he will also target Connecticut's projected $3.5 billion budget deficit.
"We've got to work to produce a more stable budget environment," he said. "The only thing we should be focusing on now is balancing the budget in the state."
The Fairfield resident also wants a thorough investigation of the voting debacle in Bridgeport, where only 21,000 ballots were ordered for the city's 69,000 registered voters, leading to allegations by Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Foley that votes went uncounted.
"We need to put together a group of Republicans and Democrats, and people not elected who are respected in the community, to investigate what did happen on election day to make sure it never happens again."
He said state government needs "a complete overhaul," including reforms to make the state "more business friendly."
"We've got to get more jobs in Connecticut, McKinney said. We keep seeing companies downsize and move their operations to other places. ... We've got to look into making investments to help businesses expand operations and hire more people."
In addition to Easton and Weston, McKinneys 28th District includes Fairfield and Newtown. He has three children who attend public schools in Fairfield, and in 2007 he was voted Legislator of the Year by the Bridgeport Regional Business Council.
