The amount of energy saved after 74 home audits in Easton, in terms of carbon reduction, is equal to planting 47.2 acres of trees or removing more than 12 cars from town roads every year.
The 74 homes in Easton reduced their energy bills after recent free home energy audits, a service that First Selectman Thomas Herrmann said in a statement has been beneficial in many ways.
"This has been a great opportunity to engage the residents of Easton and create awareness for these weatherization programs," Herrmann said of the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund and United Illuminating Co.'s Home Energy Solutions Program. "The results will be seen in reduced energy bills and the improved comfort of these Easton homes."
The energy assessments also include tests to determine whether cracks are improperly sealed, allowing air and heat to escape; tests and sealing of heating and cooling ducts; compact fluorescent light bulb installation; addition of devices to save hot water; and rebates on energy-saving appliances and other services, totaling up to $750 at no cost to the homeowners.
Of the 74 homes that received the audits, 64 used oil heat, two used propane heat and eight homes used gas heat. In total, they will save 98,614 kilowatt-hours per year and 6,458,213 kilowatt-hours in lifetime savings.
