WESTON, Conn. Weston residents have given more than three-quarters of all their political campaign donations to Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, according to information from the Center for Responsive Politics.
Romney has received $48,395 in campaign donations from Weston, while President Barack Obama has received $13,199 from Weston residents, says OpenSecrets.org, a website that tracks donations to political candidates. A total of $73,194 had been given by Westonites to Romney, Obama and five other former and current Republican candidates as of Feb. 16, the website said.
Romney was followed by former Georgia Congressman Newt Gingrich, who has picked up $3,800. Although he dropped out of the race, business executive Herman Cain received $3,500. After that, two more dropouts, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty were tied at $2,000. Texas Sen. Ron Paul concluded the donation list with $300 from Weston contributors.
In 2008, Obama received $130,025 from Weston residents during his campaign for presidency, says the site. His GOP challenger, John McCain, received $75,050.
Individuals can give a maximum of $2,500 to an individual candidate or candidate committee for each election, the website said. One of the more notable Weston donors was Selectman David Muller, who donated $250 to Obama. Also, Howard Aibel, a longtime Weston resident and civic leader, donated $500 to Obama.
