Redding's Simpaug Turnpike Bridge Remains Closed

REDDING, Conn. - Redding motorists still need to find alternative routes around the Simpaug Turnpike Bridge which will remain closed until Oct. 29, according to a news release from the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

The bridge over the Metro-North Railroad tracks has been closed since last October and will remain closed until new retaining walls, road reconstruction and minor drainage improvements are completed.

Russell Bush, project manager for Rotha Construction Co., which was awarded the project at a cost of $3,173,503, said the current problem concerns the pre-cast retaining walls, which are being stamped with a concrete form liner. "The town mandated we use a proprietary product, which was very difficult to obtain," he said.

He also said the town was misinformed about the completion date. "They thought it was a six-month project but it's always been a year-plus. They think we're six months behind schedule, but we're not."
