Rains Continues As Hurricane Joaquin Skirts Fairfield County

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Officials breathed a cautious sigh of relief Friday after forecasters predicted Hurricane Joaquin would go out to sea instead of slamming into the East Coast.

Even though Hurricane Joaquin is projected to miss the United States, heavy rains and flooding still are possible.

Though Joaquin isn't likely to have a heavy impact on the Northeast, a separate storm system still could bring substantial rain, officials said, noting that a coastal flood advisory is in effect for sections of the region.

"Rain associated with a separate system is expected to continue tonight and tomorrow," Westport Fire Chief Andy Kingsbury said in a statement. "I would advise residents in low-lying areas to take necessary precautions.”

The coastal flood advisory was set to remain in place until 6 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
